Notably, 3.28 crore young voters aged between 20 and 29 years, including 34.8 lakh first-time voters, exercised their democratic right, underscoring the importance of engaging the youth in the electoral process.
Battlegrounds and Key Contests The second phase of the Lok Sabha Elections saw intense battles unfold across various states. In Kerala, all 20 constituencies went to the polls, with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) leaving no stone unturned in their campaigns. The southern state of Karnataka witnessed a high-stakes contest across its 14 parliamentary seats, with the BJP and the Congress-led alliance locking horns.
Rajasthan's 13 constituencies also witnessed a fierce tussle between the BJP and the Congress, while the Congress and the BJP-led NDA alliance fought tooth and nail in the eight seats of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Madhya Pradesh's seven seats, Assam's five seats, and Bihar's five seats were also hotly contested.
Prominent Candidates and Campaigns This phase of the elections saw several high-profile candidates in the fray, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, the BJP's youth icon Tejasvi Surya, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, actor-turned-politicians Hema Malini and Arun Govil, and the Speaker in the outgoing Lok Sabha, Om Birla. In total, 1,210 candidates contested across the 88 constituencies in Phase 2.
The campaigns leading up to this phase were intense, with leaders from both the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to woo voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged voters, especially young and women voters, to turn out in record numbers, emphasizing that high voter turnout strengthens democracy. Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi, also issued voting appeals, stating that this election was crucial to "save the constitution."
Ensuring Free and Fair Polls To ensure the smooth conduct of the elections, the Election Commission of India deployed over 16 lakh polling officials across 1.67 lakh polling stations. Webcasting was implemented in more than 50% of the polling stations, and micro-observers were deployed at all polling stations to maintain transparency and integrity.
The Road Ahead As the second phase of the Lok Sabha Elections concludes, attention now turns to the remaining five phases, with the final phase scheduled for June 1. The BJP-led NDA, seeking an unprecedented third term under PM Modi, has set an ambitious target of winning 400 seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc aims to unseat the ruling alliance.
The results of this mammoth democratic exercise will be announced on June 4, marking the culmination of a process that has captured the attention of the entire nation and the world. Regardless of the outcome, the high voter turnout witnessed in Phase 2 is a testament to the resilience of Indian democracy and the people's unwavering faith in the democratic process.
